Princess Cruises ship hits San Francisco pier while docking Los Angeles Times

cruise ship crashed

Passengers still on board and those on the ground were trying to get a glimpse of the damage. In a statement, Princess Cruise described the collision as "unexpected contact" as they were docking just after 6 a.m.

The captain, Francesco Schettino, is serving a 16-year prison sentence for manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning a ship before all the passengers and crew had evacuated. “I imagine it like a nail stuck to the wall that marks that date, as a before and after,” he said, recounting how he joined the rescue effort that night, helping pull ashore the dazed, injured and freezing passengers from lifeboats. PT on Sunday to decide whether to continue to the next port or disembark and end their trip. A total of 2677 guests and 1161 crew were expected to be on board when the ship departs -- down from the more than 3,000 guests who initially boarded, according to Princess Cruises.

None of the 266 passengers or 131 crew members were seriously injured, HX said. The Ruby Princess had just returned from a 10-day voyage to Alaska with 3,328 guests and 1,159 crew members. There were 3,328 guests and 1,159 crew members on board when it crashed, none of whom were injured and all safely disembarked, according to Princess Cruises.

More cruise ships are under CDC investigation following COVID-19 outbreaks on board

In addition to Schettino, Ferrarini and Rusli Bin, the other people who received convictions for their role in the disaster were Cabin Service Director Manrico Giampedroni, First Officer Ciro Ambrosio and Third Officer Silvia Coronica. Thursday morning, the ship had 3,328 guests on board with 1,159 crew members and was completing a 10-day cruise to Alaska that left San Francisco on June 26. In a statement sent to TPG, Carnival said the Tampa-based Carnival Paradise had extended its Tuesday visit to Cozumel, Mexico, into Wednesday — giving passengers an extra day at the port. HONOLULU (AP) — One person died and multiple people were injured when a shuttle bus collided with pedestrians and concrete barriers at a Honolulu cruise ship terminal, authorities said Friday. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry.

Coronavirus hospitalizations in the state have also risen from about 1,200 patients two weeks ago to about 3,400 on Wednesday. But that is still less than one-fifth the number of hospitalizations reported in late August due to the delta wave. The ship, traveling under its own power, is currently sailing to Bremerhaven, Germany, for disembarkation, HX said in an updated statement Friday. Two civilian support vessels are aiding the ship in its journey to port, Danish rescue authorities said. "The situation is stable, the ship has propulsion and they are able to navigate the ship manually via emergency systems," the Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Centre said in a statement Friday local time.

The ship was returning from a 10-day cruise to Alaska when it slammed into San Francisco's Pier 27, a large dock on the waterfront of The Embarcadero that hosts cruise ships leaving and arriving in San Francisco Bay. Port Tampa Bay closed to marine traffic, including cruise ships, at 8 a.m. On Tuesday as Hurricane Ian bore down the west coast of Florida, and Port Canaveral closed to marine traffic at 12 a.m. These sailings are unique, because rather than operating one cruise at a time, the round-trip sailings overlap, meaning guests embark and debark from various cruise ports while other sailings are still ongoing. For these cruises, guests are able to meet the ship in Kusadasi, Turkey; Heraklion, Crete Greece; Piraeus-Athens, Greece; or Thessaloniki, Greece. Local time, the cruise ship was in the process of making a routine arrival in the port.

On 16 September 2013, the parbuckle salvage of the ship began, and by the early hours of 17 September, the ship was set upright on her underwater cradle. In July 2014, the ship was refloated using sponsons (flotation tanks) welded to her sides, and was towed 320 kilometres (200 mi) to her home port of Genoa for scrapping, which was completed in July 2017. An investigation focused on shortcomings in the procedures followed by Costa Concordia's crew and the actions of her captain, Francesco Schettino, who left the ship prematurely. He left about 300 passengers on board the sinking vessel, most of whom were rescued by helicopter or motorboats in the area. Schettino was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 16 years in prison. Despite receiving its own share of criticism, Costa Cruises and its parent company, Carnival Corporation, did not face criminal charges.

Celestyal Journey Experiences Docking Mishap

Carnival Paradise "is now scheduled to depart from Cozumel on Wednesday," Carnival said in the statement. "The ship will then begin heading back to Tampa, but remaining a safe distance from the storm as the company determines when Carnival Paradise can return to the Port of Tampa after the U.S. Coast Guard assesses conditions." A Bulgarian cruise ship carrying over 140 passengers crashed into a concrete wall along the Danube river in Austria. The CDC said 88 vessels are now either under investigation or observation, but it did not specify how many COVID-19 cases have been reported.

The Carnival Magic, which departed from Florida on Sunday, was docked in Ocho Rios in Jamaica when high winds caused the pier fender to collapse, hitting the ship’s side. Following the conclusion of the righting operation, the ship was kept on the platform while further inspections were made and the starboard sponsons attached. "I noticed we were spinning pretty quick, to be that close to the dock, and I was mid-ship, portside, looked out the window and we smacked into the dock," Sacramento resident and passenger Paul Zasso told ABC7 News.

The Coast Guard says there is damage to both the ship's hull and the dock. In a statement posted online, Royal Caribbean said it expected Mariner of the Seas to be back in Port Canaveral on Friday, a day later than scheduled. "It is likely the sailing will be extended until the port [of Jacksonville] reopens after the storm has passed," the line said. Also being extended are sailings out of Port Canaveral operated by Royal Caribbean's 3,344-passenger Mariner of the Seas, Norwegian Cruise Line's 3,967-passenger Norwegian Getaway and MSC Cruises' 3,502-passenger MSC Divina. The crash occurred when the shuttle bus driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake, Honolulu police said in statement. Celestyal Journey’s final Aegean Sea cruise of the year will embark on October 19, 2024, which will be followed by a 14-day repositioning cruise beginning on October 26 from Piraeus-Athens, Greece, to Doha, Qatar.

As is customary when cruises need to be extended due to inclement weather, none of the passengers on board the vessels will be charged for the extra days they spend on the ships. Also likely to remain at sea longer than expected is Disney Cruise Line's 2,508-passenger, Port Canaveral-based Disney Wish. The line told passengers on the current sailing that the vessel might not return to Port Canaveral early Friday as scheduled and could remain at sea into the weekend. There were also no injuries reported by guests and crew onboard or from onlookers on the shore, which meant passengers were still able to enjoy their port day as planned.

Six others suffered less serious injuries that did not require hospital treatment. The federal agency recommends that people avoid cruise travel if they are at increased risk of severe illness, regardless of vaccination status. Five pedestrians were transported to the hospital -- one of whom was later pronounced dead and four others are in good condition. “It was a night that, in addition to being a tragedy, had a beautiful side because the response of the people was a spontaneous gesture that was appreciated around the world,” Ortelli said.

"It's a 10-day cruise, there's plenty of time, we can make up time moving and things like that. So I don't think it's going to be an issue truthfully," Simpson said. The couple, avid cruisegoers, said Thursday morning's experience is one he won't soon forget. EDT Wednesday, Ian was about 55 miles west of Naples, Florida, and moving north-northeast at 10 miles per hour.

The extended sailings are just the latest in a string of disruptions to cruises this week caused by Hurricane Ian. More than a dozen cruise ships operating in the Caribbean and the Bahamas have had to switch course in recent days to steer clear of the storm as it barreled toward Florida. In many cases, the ships dropped or switched ports as they moved to calmer waters. The Mexican government said Tuesday it would allow cruise ships with reported coronavirus cases to dock. The country's Health Department said passengers or crew who show no symptoms will be allowed to come ashore normally, while those with symptoms or a positive virus test will be quarantined or given medical care. For Concordia survivor Georgia Ananias, the COVID-19 infections are just the latest evidence that passenger safety still isn’t a top priority for the cruise ship industry.

Who Owns My Cruise Line? A Guide to Cruise Line Parent Companies

who owns royal caribbean cruise line

Silversea Cruises is a luxury cruise line headquartered in Monaco. Founded in 1994 by the Vlasov Group of Monaco and the Lefebvre family of Rome it pioneered all-inclusive cruising with its first ship, Silver Cloud.[27] Since July 2020, it has been owned by Royal Caribbean Group. Royal Caribbean International was founded in 1968 in Norway by three shipping companies. These founding companies were IM Skaugen & Company, Anders Wilhelmsen & Company, and Gotaas Larsen. Song of Norway was their first ship, which launched two years later.

Farewell Voyage Set for Carnival-Owned Cruise Ship After 15-Year Career

Below, we break down which cruise line parent companies own which cruise line brands, as well as where those parent companies are domiciled. The Oasis-class ships are some of the largest passenger ships ever built, having surpassed the Freedom-class ships, and are surpassed only by the Icon-class ships. They can accommodate up to 5,400 passengers at double occupancy and they have a maximum capacity of 6,296 passengers. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines.

Icon of the Seas was delivered on 27 November 2023, and the second ship, Star of the Seas, is expected to be delivered in 2025.[116][120] The third ship is planned to be delivered in 2026, one year after Star of the Seas. Since Sovereign of the Seas entered service in 1987, all subsequent Royal Caribbean ships have names ending with the phrase "of the Seas". This also applies to Celebrity Cruises, except for cruises to the Galapagos Islands. In 1978, Song of Norway was the first cruise ship to be lengthened by adding an 85-foot section to a severed center of the ship. Since this project was so successful, the company decided to do the same to Nordic Prince two years later.

In addition, many of these risks and uncertainties are currently heightened by and will continue to be heightened by, or in the future may be heightened by, the COVID-19 pandemic. Royal Caribbean also has an interest in TUI Cruises, which began operations in 2009 aimed at a German-speaking market. Michael Bayley is the President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, and manages the cruise line operations.

Royal Caribbean operates internationally and has many ports of call. Five ships, Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas, and Odyssey of the Seas[104][105][106] were built as of 2021. Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas are second-generation Voyager-class vessels, and feature glass stateroom balconies that extend out from the superstructure of the ship and a larger Windjammer buffet area. They may be a licensed stockbroker or smartphone/laptop platforms. You will need to find a platform that deals with the NYSE and make a request to purchase RCL stock. He oversees all the writers at Royal Caribbean Blog, and writes a great deal of content on a daily basis. He has become one of the foremost expert on a Royal Caribbean cruise. In July 2018, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. completed the purchase of over 66.6% of shares of Silversea Cruises.

The only area they want to establish is Grand Lucayan Resort in Freeport. The hotel campus had been sold to a subsidiary of the Bahamian Government. It was formed in 2007 as a joint venture between the German tourism company TUI AG and the American cruise line operator Royal Caribbean Group, both of whom hold a 50% stake in the company. We undertake no obligation to publicly update or revise any forward-looking statements, whether as a result of new information, future events or otherwise. If you make an investment and purchase 100 shares, you receive shareholder benefits when you cruise on one of their Royal Caribbean ships.

Nordic Prince was added one year later, and Sun Viking followed in 1972. Even this 16% ownership is split between several branches within the group—Capital Research & Management Company’s international investors have an 11.66% stake. The remaining top ten of their shareholders are large investment groups like JPMorgan, The Vanguard Group, and several others. Royal Caribbean Cruises bought the remaining Silversea Cruises shares in 2020. They changed the logo and renamed themselves Royal Caribbean Group.

As of January 2024,[update] the line operates 28 ships and has three additional ships on order. Royal Caribbean operates two privately owned resorts that are used as stops on some Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries. They are Labadee, a resort on the northern coast of Haiti, and Coco Cay, a private island in the Berry Islands region of the Bahamas. Each resort features canopies for eating, lounge chairs, palm trees, white sand beaches, and a number of activities. The company chose to incorporate in Liberia to avoid paying U.S. taxes and having to follow the labor and wage laws of the country. This is the same logic that several cruise lines adopt by registering themselves in countries like the Bahamas.

Capital Research & Management owns the most shares in Royal Caribbean. Capital is a large investment group formed in 1931 with $2.6 trillion in assets in its portfolio. The decision was made to keep the two brands separate following the initial merger. The company was later rebranded to Royal Caribbean International because of this decision.

Following this purchase, Royal Caribbean experienced a rapid expansion by creating Azamara Cruises. Azamara Cruises became a subsidiary of its Celebrity Cruises branch in 2007. May 2008 saw the company form CDF Croisieres de France to reach the French-speaking markets. The typical Nordic décor reflects the landscape through which you will be sailing. Some major cruise lines advertise a fjords cruise that visits major cities and just one fjord, whereas others spend far more time cruising different waterways. Olsen, the journey is as important as the ports themselves and our Scenic Discoveries enable guests to experience the beauty of the Norwegian Fjords from the open decks of your cruise ship. Ships that visit include large vessels from Holland America Line and Celebrity Cruises and smaller ships from lines such as Azamara, Lindblad Expeditions, Silversea and Viking.

That's especially true if you prefer a leisurely dining experience followed by a show in the evening, rather than spending your time on deck. However, many potential cruisers might be unaware of recent developments regarding cruising these waters. Small, brightly-coloured wooden cabins contrast against the green mountainsides, and birds circle overhead. Only in this way you can truly appreciate the sheer size and scale of these natural waterways. Fares are from $16,997 per person, for sailings in June and July 2024 or May through July in 2025.

It's typically served in a stick-to-your-ribs gravy or lingonberry jam and enjoyed alongside potatoes and vegetables. Throughout Norway, menus in both high-end eateries and humble, family-run spots reflect the long-held local fishing traditions. King crab risotto, creamy fish soup, mussels, poached salmon, tasty fish soups and crispy cod tongues are some of the regional favorites. At the local Tourist Office, you can usually rent a bicycle or pick up some helpful walking and cycling guides. For rainy days, bring an umbrella or raincoat, or head indoors to one of the city's world-class museums. We've narrowed down a list of the most; historic, cultural, famous, and royal significance.

Plan the best spa getaway possible with experiences being tailored to suit your vacation needs. This thrill-seekers guide will show you where to get the ultimate adrenaline fix on European vacations. Cruises from Venice can be a gateway to discovery — and not just of the places you sail to. As an Arctic wonder, Norway offers adventure, attractions and charm all year round. In Norway's larger cities, like Oslo and Bergen, you can go shopping in big malls and department stores, but there are also many small boutiques, antique shops and markets all throughout the country. The small trendy design stores are stocked with gifts and souvenirs like Norwegian brown cheese or knitted sweaters.

For example, this Portsmouth to Reykjavik 12-day itinerary on the Norwegian Star includes ports in Scotland, Norway, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland. The port call at Ulvik means guests will get to experience the Hardangerfjord on the way in and out. The full 11-night roundtrip (Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen) and the one-way components are popular cruise options.

fjords cruise

They are famous for blue-tinged glaciers, icebergs, the rugged Andes mountains and pristine wilderness. The most well-known of the steep-walled fjords is the narrow Garabaldi Fjord, with glaciers as high as skyscrapers. The remote village of Tortel, entirely built on stilts, is visited on itineraries in the region.

Since 1893, combined cargo and passenger vessels have served the Norwegian coastline providing a vital transport link to small communities. To this day, such vessels still operate but they are best-known internationally for the cruise-like roundtrip package deals. While a cruise of the Norwegian fjords is a popular bucket list item for many, there are many varieties of cruise in terms of length, location and concept that make for wildly different experiences. Travelers should also be aware of the anti-cruise sentiment that has been building in Norway this year.

In this article, I'll introduce these popular cruises in Norway and explain why so many people want to take one. For example, Norwegian Cruise Line visits the Geirangerfjord or Nordfjord on many of its itineraries billed as ‘Iceland & Norway’ or ‘Northern Europe’. MSC offers cruises to at least one fjord in many of its Northern Europe itineraries from Kiel, Germany. Some of the most commonly seen ships in the Norwegian fjords are British-focused lines sailing from Southampton or Newcastle.

You can expect stops in destinations like Alesund and Oslo on these itineraries, though you'll generally avoid playing the narrow waters of the inland fjords. Norwegian Fjords cruises generally range in length from seven to 14 nights. Bergen is the main city on most fjord itineraries, though some may include Oslo as well. Ships on these routes will head inland from Bergen, sailing between towering cliffs and mountains that plummet steeply into the sea.

If you fancy breaking bread with a local, or enjoying access to little known foodie haunts, check out our foodie shore experiences available to view in My P&O Cruises once you have made your booking. You will see picturesque villages along the fjord and a beautiful lush landscape with waterfalls, rivers and steep mountains. Kaupanger is one of two ports where the iconic ferry trip on the inner part of the Sognefjord departs and arrives. This is a two and a half hour long fjord cruise on the Sognefjord and the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord, between Kaupanger and Gudvangen.

You still need to select excursions to show you the very best of the region. Set sail for the Norwegian fjords and explore incredible UNESCO World Heritage Sites bordered by snowy peaks and impressive cliffs with pure waterfalls. Visit unique glaciers and villages tucked away in the hollows of these undulating landscapes. Bring an alarm clock. Many cruise ships enter the beautiful Geirangerfjord early in the morning. It's worth setting an alarm and getting up early to watch the ship sail in.

Upcoming Celebrity Cruises: 2024 Prices, Itineraries + Activities on Cruise Critic

After embarkation concierge lunch sandwiched in-between two tables of 2 (so we were actually a table of 6 lol) we asked for a table for 2 not close to anyone. Our wish was granted each night with a lovely, quiet table by the stairs. We enjoy open seating and we do actually enjoy sitting with tablemates, but I think the Open Seating doesn't allow you to sit with the same people each night. So we feel like you are interviewing for a new job each evening.

The common ladies rooms were generally well kept. Some had attendants in them, some didn't. I love the hand towels and those were fresh.

Thanks for posting about Infinity. Appreciate your thoughts on the ship and also about each of the ports.

Celebrity Reflection Roll Calls

I realize she is now 20 older and never received that extensive refit, but she has great bones. Wonderful pools and decks and this cruise is all about lounging on deck. I can deal with a little wear and tear. Funny you mentioned the balcony.

Celebrity Ups Its Game in Entertainment

LOL  The piano guy was AMAZING and he preformed another night in the lounge. Get there early, people were sitting on the floor! We went to the adult comedian show in the theater and he was super funny.

Ocean view Cafe for lunch was fantastic. Wonderful salad bar and YES there is a fish and chips day. I tried the fish but did not care for the breading, too soggy and too much of it.

Live from Regatta

We had a reservation but had to wait because the group in front of us couldn't find a table they liked. Literally we watched them sit, take menus and then get up to move tables... So we waited almost 25 minutes for our table for 2. Then the waiter came right over and said "do you know what you want" we were like ummm no we haven't opened the menus, how about a cocktail first?

Live - Vision of the Seas, April 12th from Norfolk!

She said the most well-attended shows were game-show style shows – so cruisers should expect more of them. However, it’s still not clear how the move offers better value for the cruiser, especially when Celebrity has just raised the cost of gratuities. “Classics are coming back, more variety on the menu and chocolate desert every night. They said by Thanksgiving so that is pretty soon,” tfred said, in a comment on the thread. I live in Georgetown about 3 miles from the Franklin County line, lol.

LOL  Martini Bar was a hot spot and the drinks were wonderful. We actually met and ended up spending a lot of time with the Kostas, the Director of Food and Beverage. He is a wonderful young man and a great brand ambassador. We chatted frequently throughout the week and he seems to actually want to hear our opinions. I sailed on INFINITY almost 20 years ago to Hawaii and loved it. Happy to return in September with some friends.

The whole evening was just off. Our poor waiter was the only one in our section with 6 tables seated all within 30 minutes of each other. The food was nothing spectacular. Defiantly not Ruth's Chris or Jeff Ruby but not "Fancy like Applebee's" either LOL. Food is good but again staffing issues made the meal slow.

Never been on a bad ship (no matter the cruise line) yet. That's what is important to us. I am sorry we don't have any of the planners. We actually asked our attendant not to deliver them after the first day because everything is on the app. The only thing we found different was the "sale" papers that come in them. The sales are not listed on the app.

Passengers staying at certain suite levels have additional complimentary dining privileges, and those staying in AquaClass rooms can dine in the Blu restaurant without charge. We are on our first Celebrity cruise on Infinity in October. Did the A/C on the ship overall seem to work fine?

I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Speaking only for us, we wouldn't be concerned. Cruise line, food, entertainment, condition, age, size of the ship is subjective. We never book or not book a cruise based on someone else's positive or negative opinions or experiences.

There is a free trolley that makes 3 stops. We decided to ride the trolley around before deciding where to get off. All 3 stops are within walking distance of each other. It looks to me like Hilton owns all the property in this section of the island. The trolley stops at the Hotel where you have an infinity pool, then the fishing pier where there are a couple shops, then Resorts World then the public beach. Find your Celebrity Infinity Roll Call by choosing your sailing month from the drop down menu below.

The crew was constantly cleaning. Cleaning the stairwells, the pool deck, the Oceanview Cafe, the casino. Public areas were very well maintained.

They were understaffed and the amount of guests were too many for this type of venue. We board Infinity a week from Saturday. Will be our first time back on M-class in many moons. Thanks for posting your thoughts.

Night Bermuda Cruise From New YorkDetails

Unlike St. Thomas, St. Martin and most of the other sunny isles that cruise ships visit from Eastern ports, Bermuda isn't in the relatively calm Caribbean. It's way out in the North Atlantic, and that's a body of water that isn't always tranquil. Throughout 2024, Norwegian's Bermuda cruises set sail from Boston or New York, docking at the Royal Naval Dockyard. Five-night cruises feature one overnight stay in Bermuda, while seven-night cruises typically offer two overnights.

You'll also pay more if you want a sailing during the busier parts of the summer.

Choose your port of departure depending on how many days you want to spend exploring Bermuda and all it has to offer. Explore fortresses and British colonial landmarks, or dive into the sea for some of the best scuba diving in the world. Generally speaking, the beginning of the year is when many cruise lines do their annual promotions and offer numerous deals.

Two If By Sea

This is right before the busy season kicks off, yet a time that already enjoys excellent weather. Because it’s not the high season quite yet, the prices could be a bit lower then, too. Fares for Carnival's Aug. 15 departure to Bermuda start at $639 per person. As those who regularly fly to Bermuda from the East Coast know, that's not much more than the typical cost of roundtrip flights to and from the destination alone, and all those flights do is get you there. So, you want to look closely at the various ships offering the trips and weigh how they match up to your personality. Meet-and-greets with Disney characters, Disney-themed shows and the most extensive kiddie fun zones at sea are just a few of the family-friendly allures of a Disney cruise. That's just enough time to pick out one major activity, and even then, you're going to be racing around. As exotic as that sounds, it was nothing if not rushed, with each stop basically lasting just long enough to get the Insta photo, and we still barely made it back to the ship before departure.
